The South African Gqom group Phelimuncasi is in residency in Denmark. The family trio consists of the twins Makan Nana (middle), Khera (right) and their cousin Malathion (left). Gqom is a subgenre to House and has its origin in Durban, South Africa, like the trio itself. Phelimuncasi started with a soundtrack to so called cab parties. And because of the genres rebellious history, it is not played in mainstream radio in South Africa. Thus, the group performs on stages around the world. Gqom is a genre created for and by the people. “To party can be an outlet, a sanctuary, a break from daily life. It can also be an act of rebellion. Partying can be political.” Shot for Politiken, 2024.
